Privacy Policy

This site is run by one person. I collect the minimum I need to send you what you asked for and to help you if you hire me. I do not sell your data, I do not run advertising trackers, and you can have everything deleted by sending one email.

Who is responsible

John of Japan (also operating as Settle Japan) is the data controller for this site. Contact: johnhofjapan@gmail.com.

What I collect, and why

When you request a free guide or join the email list

• Your email address and which guide or page you signed up from.
• Used to send you that guide, a short related follow-up sequence, and occasional Japan relocation emails.

When you use a quiz or assessment tool

• Your answers to the Visa Diagnostic, Japan Fit assessment, or eligibility quiz, along with your email address.
• Used to generate your result, email you a copy, and give context if you later book a call.
• These tools are educational. They are not a legal or immigration determination.

When you enquire about property or relocation help

• What you provide on the form — typically name, email, messaging contact, target area, budget range, timeline, and how you plan to finance a purchase.
• Used to answer you, and where relevant to introduce you to a Japan-based partner agent. I only pass your details to a partner agent when you have asked for that introduction.

When you buy something or book a call

• Payment is handled entirely by Stripe. I receive confirmation that a purchase happened plus your email address. I never see or store your card number.
• Call bookings are handled by Calendly, which shares the booking details you enter with me.

Automatically

• No analytics, no advertising pixels, no cross-site tracking, and no marketing cookies. There is no Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or similar on this site.
• My host keeps standard server logs (including IP address) for security and reliability, as any web host does.
• Email delivery records whether a message was delivered, opened, or clicked, so I can tell whether emails are landing and stop sending to addresses that bounce.

Who processes your data

These are the only third parties involved. Each is used for the stated purpose only.

These providers operate internationally, so your data may be stored or processed outside your home country, including in the United States.

What I will never do

• Sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
• Add you to unrelated mailing lists, or pass your email to another newsletter.
• Share your enquiry with a property agent you did not ask to be introduced to.
• Run advertising or behavioural tracking on this site.

How long it is kept

Subscriber and enquiry records are kept while they are useful for the service you asked for. If you unsubscribe, your address is marked as unsubscribed so that you are not contacted again. If you ask for deletion, the records are removed.

Your choices

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or the CCPA, including the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict the use of your data, and the right to complain to your local data protection authority. The email above is the way to exercise any of them.

Children

This site is intended for adults planning a move to Japan. It is not directed at children, and I do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

Security

Data is held in access-controlled accounts with the providers listed above, and the site is served over HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, so I keep the amount of information collected small on purpose.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects how your information is used, the date at the top of this page will change. Material changes will be noted in an email to subscribers.
